Overview
A door release delay occurs when an access point (door or gate) opens several seconds after a user initiates access. Typically, the delay ranges from 4 to 10 seconds. In most cases, the door unlocks only after the ButterflyMX “Door Release” countdown (default: 9 seconds) completes, rather than immediately.
Symptoms
You may be experiencing a door release delay if:
The door or gate does not open immediately after access is granted.
The door unlocks only after a short countdown finishes.
This behavior is consistent across multiple access attempts.
Root Cause
This issue is caused by a third-party access control system wired to the ButterflyMX system.
Why this happens
The third-party controller is configured to wait for the ButterflyMX relay signal to end before triggering the door strike.
Instead of activating at the start of the relay signal, the controller activates at the end, resulting in a noticeable delay.
ButterflyMX sends the relay signal correctly, but the downstream controller logic introduces the delay.
Resolution
Because the behavior is controlled by a third-party system, adjustments must be made outside of ButterflyMX.
To resolve the issue:
The property manager or installer must review the configuration of the third-party access controller.
The controller should be configured to trigger the door strike at the start of the relay signal, not after it ends.
Wiring and relay logic should be verified to ensure proper signal handling.
ButterflyMX Support can coordinate with the property manager or installer to explain the required configuration changes.
What to Expect Next
Once the third-party controller is reconfigured correctly, the door should unlock immediately when access is granted, without any delay.
