Overview
If you are unable to unlock a door using your Apple Watch, the issue may be related to a building feature called geo-fencing. Some buildings use geo-fencing to ensure that doors can only be unlocked when a user is physically close to the property.
When this feature is enabled, it can prevent Apple Watch from unlocking the door.
Why This Happens
Geo-fencing requires the device to verify that you are within a specific distance of the property before allowing the door to unlock.
At this time, Apple Watch does not support the location functionality required for this feature in the same way the iPhone does. Because of this limitation, the Apple Watch cannot meet the geo-fencing requirement needed to unlock the door.
As a result, buildings that have geo-fencing enabled may prevent door unlock actions from Apple Watch.
What You Can Do
To unlock the door in buildings where geo-fencing is enabled, you can use the ButterflyMX mobile app on your iPhone, which fully supports the location verification required for geo-fencing.
Future Improvements
This behavior is related to current platform limitations. As device capabilities and integrations evolve, improvements may become available in future updates.
