Finding and organizing cameras
Are the camera images live video? No. Those are snapshots that refresh about every 30 seconds. Select a camera to see its live video.
Can I change the order my cameras appear in? Yes. Sort A to Z, Z to A, or choose a custom order and drag cameras into the sequence that suits your property.
What is a camera group? A named set of cameras that belong together, such as a lobby, a parking level, or amenity spaces. Open a group to view all of its cameras at once.
Will my colleagues see the groups I create? Yes. Groups are saved for the property, so everyone with camera access sees them.
If I delete a group, do I lose the cameras? No. Only the grouping is removed.
Access events
What events appear in the Events panel? Access events, meaning successful and denied door releases at your property.
Why am I not seeing events for one of my cameras? The camera needs an access point associated with it. Without that link, access events at that door will not appear against that camera. Navigate to devices, camera actions, and select edit camera to select an access point to associate with it.
Can I see events from doors that have no camera? Yes. Select the option to show events from access points without cameras. Intercoms will show a snapshot. Other devices will show the event details without an image, which still tells you when and where something happened.
Why does one of my events have no video? The short clip is recorded by the camera at the moment of the event. If that camera was offline, the event is still logged but there is no footage attached to it.
Viewing recorded footage
How do I move to a specific moment? Drag along the timeline to scrub, or use the date and time controls to jump straight to a time. You can also select an event to go to the moment it happened.
What do the colors on the timeline mean? Purple means recordings are available. A white band with grey diagonal stripes is a gap, where the camera did not record. Footage cannot be played back or exported from a gap.
Why is there a gap in my recordings? The camera was not recording during that period, most often because it was offline or lost its connection to its gateway.
How far back can I go? That depends on your property's storage plan, which is 7, 30, or 90 days.
Can I zoom in on the video? Yes, up to four times, using the on-screen control or your mouse's scroll wheel. You can pan around the frame while zoomed.
Can I speed up or slow down playback? Yes, from half speed up to four times speed. You can also skip 10 seconds backward or forward.
How do I get back to live video? Select Go live.
Viewing several cameras at once
How do I compare cameras? Open a camera and add others to Multi-view. They stay synchronized to the same moment in time, so you can follow someone from one area to another.
What is the difference between Spotlight and Grid? Spotlight keeps one camera large with the others alongside. Grid shows them together and holds up to six cameras.
Does my Multi-view selection save? No. It resets with each session. If you want a set of cameras you can return to, create a group instead.
What is Live monitor? A separate window showing live video from your cameras, intended for a dedicated screen at a front desk or security office. It holds up to 50 cameras. Your layout is saved for you in the browser you are using, so it does not follow you to another computer, and other users have their own.
Exporting footage
How do I export? Select Prepare export, drag the start and end markers to the exact range you want, choose the cameras to include, and submit. Exporting more than one camera at once is available while viewing multiple cameras.
Where does the export go? A download link is emailed to the address of the account you are signed in with. A multi-camera export arrives as a single email containing a separate link for each camera.
How long does it take? Most arrive shortly. Larger requests can take up to 15 minutes.
How long is the download link available? 30 days, regardless of your storage plan.
Can I share the footage with someone outside ButterflyMX? Yes. The link works for anyone, including law enforcement, without a ButterflyMX account.
Where can I see my past exports? Select Exports. Every request is logged with its time range, cameras, file size, status, who requested it, and when it expires. You can download again or copy the link from there.
My export says Partial. What does that mean? Part of the range you selected fell in a gap where the camera was not recording. The export contains the footage that exists.
My export says there is no footage. There were no recordings at all for the range you selected. Check the timeline for that period.
