Resident Key in Apple Wallet lets you use your iPhone or Apple Watch for secure, contactless building entry. This replaces physical keys or fobs, making access simpler and more reliable.
Getting Started
Requirements
To use Resident Key in Apple Wallet with Express Mode, you need:
- iPhone SE, iPhone 6s or iPhone 6s Plus, or later, with iOS 12.4 or later
- OR Apple Watch Series 1 or Series 2, or later, with watchOS 5.2.1 or later
How to Add Your Key to Apple Wallet
- Open the ButterflyMX app and navigate to the Account tab
- Select Manage Wallet Pass
- Tap Add to Apple Wallet
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete setup
- Your key will automatically be configured with Express Mode enabled
Using Your Key
Opening Doors
Simply tap your iPhone or Apple Watch on the door reader to unlock. With Express Mode enabled, you don't need to unlock your phone or authenticate with Face ID/Touch ID.
From your lock screen: Your key will automatically appear when you bring your device near the reader.
Express Mode
Express Mode is automatically enabled when you add your key, allowing you to unlock doors without unlocking your device.
To turn off Express Mode (if you prefer extra security):
- Open the Apple Wallet app
- Tap on your ButterflyMX key
- Tap the info icon (i)
- Toggle off Express Mode
When Express Mode is off, you'll need to authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode each time you use your key.
Managing Your Key
Viewing Your Key
- Open the Apple Wallet app
- Find your ButterflyMX Resident Key
Removing Your Key
- Open the Apple Wallet app
- Tap on your ButterflyMX key
- Tap the info icon (i)
- Scroll down and tap Remove Key
Important: If you remove your key, you'll need to request a new pass from your property management to add it back.
Transferring to a New iPhone
If you get a new iPhone and use the same Apple ID:
- On your new iPhone, open the Wallet app
- Tap the Add button (+)
- Tap Previous Cards
- Tap your resident key
- Follow the onscreen instructions
Your key should transfer automatically if you're using the same iCloud account.

Can I share my key with someone else?
No. Each resident key is unique to one person and cannot be transferred to other residents.
Can I use my key on both my iPhone and Apple Watch?
Yes! Your key works on one iPhone and one Apple Watch that share the same iCloud account.

Yes, your key will continue to work for up to 5 hours after your phone battery dies.
How close do I need to be to the reader?
Hold your device within one inch of the reader for best results.
