Overview
- The dormakaba EVO LZ integration provides unified access management for both unit and common area doors through the ButterflyMX OS.
- Residents and staff can use the ButterflyMX app for access via PIN, dormakaba fob, Swipe to Open, Bluetooth, and Visitor Pass.
- All access management is centralized in the ButterflyMX OS, eliminating the need for multiple systems or physical keys.
- EVO locks require initial programming via the Lyazon Utility App before integration with ButterflyMX can be complete. Refer to How to Set Up Dormakaba Online Integration to complete this first.
Supported Models & Requirements
- Supported models: EVO LZ-D (Deadbolt), LZ-M (Mortise), LZ-L (Lever), LZ-I (Interconnected), LZ-P (Panic).
- Requires building-wide, managed 2.4GHz Wi-Fi at each managed door.
- Only dormakaba ComID fobs are compatible; ButterflyMX fobs are not due to encryption.
- dormakaba ComID fobs cannot be purchased through ButterflyMX. They must be purchased by the integrator or vendor who procured the locks for your property.
- ButterflyMX devices require a firmware update to properly read dormakaba ComID fobs; please reach out to our Support Team to enable this.
- Refer to the dormakaba EVO User Guide for general lock operating information and troubleshooting.
- ELPS Battery Backup Device: This tool temporarily powers a lock with dead batteries, enabling entry to replace them. Each EVO order includes an ELPS, but it can also be purchased separately from vendors like GoKeyless.
ButterflyMX OS Information for Property Managers
Device Management in ButterflyMX OS
- Devices Page > Smart Locks Tab: View all commissioned smart locks, their last reported status (online/offline), battery level, and access code count. This dashboard view is updated hourly.
-
Smart Lock Device Detail: See most up to date lock connection status, door release history, permissions (who has access), and lock events.
Assigning Access
- Unit Smart Locks: When a tenant is assigned to a unit with a smart lock in the ButterflyMX OS, they automatically receive access via the ButterflyMX app on their move-in date. Removing a tenant from ButterflyMX OS removes their access.
- You can confirm unit assignment in the Spaces page under the Smart Lock column.
- If unit assignments need to be updated, this can be done from the Integrations page.
- Common Area Locks: Managed via Access Groups. Admins can add these locks to default or custom groups to control tenant or vendor access.
- Smart Lock (Default) Access Group: When your smart lock integration is enabled, a new Access Group is created and all new smart locks will be automatically added to this group when they are assigned. By default this group will include the Property and Community Administrators.
- Be sure to manually add or remove admins from this group as your team grows.
Programming dormakaba Fobs
- Go to the Tenants page in the ButterflyMX dashboard.
- Select the tenant and click "New Access Tool."
- Choose "Smart Lock Key Fob & Card."
- Enter the 8-digit ID from the dormakaba fob (the system auto-fills leading zeros so no need to enter).
- Save—the fob is now programmed for use on both smart locks and ButterflyMX devices that the tenant has access to in the ButterflyMX OS. Please confirm it was added as a "Smart Lock Key Fob & Card"
- Please note: All ButterflyMX devices (including Monarch intercoms and card readers, require a firmware update to enable Dormakaba fob compatibility. Reach out to our Support Team (800) 398-4416 ext. 2 to enable this.
Access Codes on Demand
- If Wi-Fi is disrupted, property managers can generate 6-digit access codes for locks via the ButterflyMX OS. Please note, the lock does require power to utilize an Access Code (but internet is not required).
- Types of codes:
- Resident code: valid for 1 year
- Short-term code: valid 1–31 days
- Visitor code: valid 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours
- Codes are unique to each lock and do not work on other ButterflyMX devices.
- To revoke a code before expiration, generate a revocation code in the OS and enter it at the lock.
How to Create Access Codes:
- Go to Devices > Smart Locks tab.
- Select the lock and go to Access Codes.
- Click "Create Access Code," select type, name, start time, and duration.
- Share the generated code with the user.
Note: Only property managers can create/revoke codes; residents cannot. If the lock is exhibiting a long RED LED, the batteries most likely need to be replaced - please refer to the ELPS Device Instructions to regain entry.
Additional Features & Best Practices
- Battery Alerts: Enable tenant alerts at 10% battery and admin alerts at 25% from the Integrations page in the OS.
-
ELPS Battery Backup Device: This tool temporarily powers a lock with dead batteries, enabling entry to replace them. Each EVO order includes an ELPS, but it can also be purchased separately from vendors like GoKeyless.
-
If a lock is exhibiting a long red LED, this is indicative that the batteries are dead. Refer to Dormakaba's recommendations below which include using the ELPS device.
-
- One-Touch Re-lock: Allows tenants to re-lock doors with a single tap.
- Please note failure to ensure the lock is installed properly and the deadbolt can be fully projected inside the door frame may result in allowing access without a credential. See note on page 2 of commissioning guide below:
- Auto-Lock: Available only on Mortise and Latch models; can be enabled/disabled by the ButterflyMX Support Team during commissioning.
- Visitor Passes and Swipe to Open: These features are enabled on all online locks by default. You can disable them per lock, via the Integrations page or reach out to our Support Team.
- Vendor Access: Use Visitor Pass or create custom Access Groups for vendors.
- Troubleshooting: For access issues, property managers can use Swipe to Open or issue a Visitor Pass from the ButterflyMX mobile app if the lock is online; otherwise, generate an Access Code on Demand for access to an offline lock.
- For locks that have been offline for over 24 hours, follow the troubleshooting tree on page 2 of the dormakaba commissioning guide to reconnect.
- Locks are designed to routinely go offline to conserve battery. A lock that has not connected in over 24 hours may need to be rebooted or visited to reconnect. Check out our troubleshooting guide here.
