What Do the Status Labels Mean?
Go to ButterflyMX OS → Devices → Smart Locks to see your lock statuses.
| Status | What It Means | Do I Need to Act? |
| Online | Lock is connected and working normally | ✅ No |
| Newly Offline | Lock briefly disconnected to save battery — reconnected within 24 hours | ✅ No — this is normal |
| Offline | Lock hasn't connected in over 24 hours | ⚠️ Yes — see below |
| Local Only | Lock uses Bluetooth only — no Wi-Fi connection expected | ✅ No — this is normal for BLE locks |
"Newly Offline" — Should I Worry?
No. Wi-Fi smart locks are designed to periodically disconnect from Wi-Fi to save battery — up to 8–10 times per day. This is normal built-in behavior, not a malfunction.
When a lock is briefly offline:
- ✅ PIN codes and fobs still work at the keypad
- ❌ Swipe to Open is temporarily unavailable — it returns on its own when the lock reconnects
- ✅ dormakaba EVO LZ only: You can generate an Access Code on Demand (ACOD) from ButterflyMX OS as a backup
💡 If a resident can't get in, direct them to use their PIN code.
"Local Only" — Is My Lock Broken?
No. "Local Only" is the permanent, healthy status for all Bluetooth (BLE) locks — including Kwikset UNITE, and dormakaba EVO LZ or Yale Assure Lock 2 when deployed in BLE mode.
These locks communicate directly with the resident's phone via Bluetooth — they never connect to Wi-Fi. "Local Only" means everything is working as designed.
Important differences for BLE locks:
- Residents must be physically at the door to unlock — no remote unlock
- Swipe to Open works via Bluetooth proximity only
My Lock Shows "Offline" — What Do I Do?
A lock that hasn't connected in over 24 hours needs attention. Work through these steps:
Step 1 — Check if multiple locks are affected
- Multiple locks offline → contact your IT team or ISP — likely a network issue
- One lock offline → continue below
Step 2 — Power cycle the lock
Remove and reinstall the batteries. Wait 2 minutes and check the status in ButterflyMX OS.
Step 3 — dormakaba EVO LZ only: run star code checks
Press these codes on the lock keypad in order:
-
**5# — Wi-Fi board check (always run first)
- 🔵🟢 Blue + Green = board OK → continue
- 🔵🔴 Blue + Red = re-seat the cable inside the battery cover, wait 90 seconds
-
**1# — Wi-Fi connection check
- 🔵🟢 Blue + Green = connected ✅
- 🔵🔴 Blue + Red = not connected → continue to Step 4
-
**8# — Signal strength check
- 🔵🟢 Blue + Green = signal OK
- 🔵🔴 Blue + Red = signal too weak — AP may be too far from the lock
Step 4 — Test with a mobile hotspot
Connect the lock to a phone's personal hotspot instead of the building Wi-Fi:
- iPhone: Settings → Personal Hotspot → enable "Maximize Compatibility"
- If the lock connects to the hotspot → building network issue — contact your IT team or ISP
- If the lock doesn't connect to the hotspot → contact ButterflyMX Support
