Context
Property managers and administrators can give a guest, contractor, or delivery driver hands-free vehicle access by adding their license plate to a visitor pass in the ButterflyMX OS. The gate opens automatically when that vehicle arrives during the pass window.
This article covers creating the pass from the ButterflyMX OS. Residents and administrators can also issue LPR enabled visitor passes from the ButterflyMX app, and staff can issue them from Front Desk Station.
Before you start
Offer visitor vehicle access using license plate recognition (LPR) must be enabled in Property Settings > Access Settings. If the vehicle fields do not appear when you create a pass, that setting is off.
What to do
- From the main menu, go to Access Controls > Passes and Codes > Delivery and Visitor Passes.
- Click New Visitor Pass.
- Name the pass, then enter the visitor's name and contact information.
- In the Vehicle information section directly below, check Visitor can access with license plate.
- Enter the vehicle details. License plate and State are required. Vehicle type, Make, Model, and Color are optional.
- Add an internal note for this visitor if needed.
- Below the vehicle information, select the access points and set the start and end times.
- Save the pass.
Good to know
- Residents can issue these passes too. If your property allows it, residents can add a guest's license plate to a visitor pass from the ButterflyMX app. See Enable license plate access for resident-created visitor passes.
- Front Desk Station staff can issue them as well. See Using LPR with Front Desk Station.
- You are notified when the vehicle arrives. Whoever issued the pass receives a notification the moment the visitor's vehicle is recognized at the gate.
- One vehicle per visitor. A vehicle can be assigned to one visitor on a pass. If a pass includes several visitors, assign the vehicle to the person who will be driving.
- Vehicle information cannot be edited after a pass is created. If you enter the wrong plate, remove that visitor and re-add them, or create a new pass.
- An incorrect plate does not produce an error. The pass itself will look fine. The vehicle simply will not be recognized at the gate, because the plate on file does not match. Double check the plate and issuing state before saving.
- The visitor still receives their PIN and QR code. If the plate is not read, they can use either at the access point, or call the resident.
