ButterflyMX complies with all state and local tax regulations. While sales tax is required on most purchases, some customers may be eligible for an exemption. Below you’ll find key information about how sales tax is applied to your invoices and how to submit a valid exemption certificate to ensure your account is set up correctly.
Q: Why am I being charged sales tax?
A: Sales tax is a legal requirement that we must comply with under state and local tax laws. The applicable tax rate is determined by the jurisdiction of your shipping address (for hardware invoices) or property address (for software invoices). The tax amount is clearly displayed during checkout and on your invoice.
Q: Can I request a sales tax exemption?
A: Yes. If your organization qualifies, you may request a sales tax exemption by providing a valid sales tax exemption certificate. This typically applies to partners, installers, and projects that qualify as capital improvements under applicable tax regulations.
Q: What information must the exemption certificate include?
A: Your certificate should clearly state:
Certificate number
Federal Tax ID
Issue date and expiration date
Type of exemption (e.g., resale, exempt organization, government)
State or jurisdiction where the exemption applies
Name and address of your business
Please note that the entity listed on the document should match the entity BMX is billing.
Q: How do I submit my exemption certificate?
A: Please email a copy of your valid exemption certificate to invoices@butterflymx.com. Once verified, we will update your account and remove sales tax from future invoices.
Q: Will past sales tax charges be refunded once I provide a certificate?
A: Depending on state and local regulations, we may be able to credit or refund previously paid sales tax after your certificate is accepted. If not permitted, the exemption will only apply to future invoices.
Q: Is sales tax included in the contract?
A: No, sales tax is included in the invoice.
Note for Canadian customers: If needed, you can find our Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) number on the invoice sent to you.
