Let residents add a visitor’s vehicle to a pass so an LPR-enabled gate can open automatically during the visit.
How it works
When a resident creates a visitor pass in the ButterflyMX mobile app, they can associate a vehicle with the visitor. When that vehicle approaches an LPR-enabled gate during the active pass window, the camera reads the plate and the gate opens automatically. The visitor does not need to call the resident from the intercom or scan a QR code at that gate.
Before you begin
- Your property must use ButterflyMX license plate recognition at the applicable vehicle entrance. The visitor LPR setting appears automatically for properties with LPR.
- Visitor Passes must be enabled for residents in ButterflyMX OS.
- You must have permission to update the property’s access settings.
Enable LPR for visitor passes
1. Open the property’s Access settings
In ButterflyMX OS, open the property settings and select Access settings.
2. Find Visitor Passes
Confirm that Visitor Pass is enabled, then review the property’s visitor pass duration and other pass rules.
3. Turn on visitor vehicle access
Under Advanced pass settings, select Offer visitor vehicle access using license plate recognition (LPR). Then select Save at the bottom-right of the page.
What residents and visitors can expect
- Residents will see Add vehicle for each visitor while creating a pass in the ButterflyMX app.
- License plate and state are required. Vehicle type, make, model, and color are optional in the supplied app flow.
- The saved vehicle is associated with that visitor’s pass.
- Each visitor can have one vehicle. A pass can include multiple vehicles when it includes multiple visitors, with a maximum of one vehicle per visitor.
- Vehicle access applies only at the LPR access points included in the pass.
- LPR access remains active only for the pass duration, and the property’s existing visitor pass rules continue to apply.
- Admins can review LPR access granted to visitors on the Door Releases page and audit visitor passes from the Visitor Passes tab in ButterflyMX OS.
Important: If the LPR visitor access setting is off, residents will not see the option to add a vehicle to a visitor pass.
Suggested resident communication
“You can now add your visitor’s license plate when creating a visitor pass in the ButterflyMX app. During the active pass window, the LPR camera can recognize the plate and open the vehicle gate automatically. Enter the plate exactly as it appears, omitting any special characters, and select the issuing state.”
Access expiration and deleted passes
Vehicle access expires when the visitor pass expires. If a pass is deleted before its expiration time, allow a few moments for the deletion to sync; the vehicle will then stop receiving access.
