Overview
If your building uses a Yale Assure Lock 2 (Pro 2) integrated with ButterflyMX, you can unlock your apartment door and common area doors directly from the ButterflyMX mobile app using a PIN code or Bluetooth — no separate Yale app required for residents. Your building may be set up in Online (Wi-Fi) or Offline (BLE) mode; a few features work slightly differently depending on your building's mode, noted below.
What You'll Need
- ✅ The ButterflyMX mobile app — free on iOS (App Store) or Android (Google Play)
- ✅ A ButterflyMX account — you should have received an email invitation from your property manager
- ✅ Bluetooth enabled on your phone (needed for Swipe-to-Open, especially in offline buildings)
- ✅ Internet access (cellular or Wi-Fi) — needed to authenticate with ButterflyMX
- ✅ If your building is offline/BLE: you'll need to be physically near the door (approx. 10-15 feet) for access changes to sync
Setting Up Bluetooth on Your Phone
- iPhone: Settings → Bluetooth → toggle ON
- Android: Settings → Connected devices (or Connections) → Bluetooth → toggle ON
- You can also enable Bluetooth from Control Center (iPhone) or Quick Settings (Android)
How to Unlock Your Door
Using a PIN Code (Both Modes)
Enter your assigned PIN on the lock's keypad any time — no app or phone needed. Initial sync needed for offline mode locks.
Using Swipe-to-Open in the App
- Open the ButterflyMX app
- On the home screen, find your doors listed with a Swipe to Open button
- Swipe right next to your unit lock (or the common door you'd like to open)
- You'll see a confirmation on screen
This works differently depending on your building's mode:
- Online buildings: Swipe-to-Open works remotely, from anywhere — across the building, from the parking lot, or away from the property — over Wi-Fi.
- Offline (BLE) buildings: Swipe-to-Open only works via Bluetooth, so you'll need to be within about 10-15 feet of the door with Bluetooth turned on. This is expected behavior, not a malfunction — if you're unsure which mode your building uses, check with your property manager.
Note: Yale locks do not support fob access with ButterflyMX. Access is via PIN code or the ButterflyMX app only.
Visitor Access
Visitor Pass is supported for Yale locks in both modes. In offline buildings, a new visitor pass will not be active at the door right away — this is expected, since offline access updates sync when someone uses the ButterflyMX mobile app on the lock with Bluetooth on, rather than instantly. You can find information about syncing your offline Yale lock here.
Auto-Lock Behavior
Auto-Lock timing for your Yale lock is set by your property through the Yale Access app, not through ButterflyMX. If you have questions about how quickly your door re-locks after entry, contact your property manager.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I unlock my door remotely, from outside the building?
A: Depends on your building's mode. In online buildings, yes — Swipe-to-Open works remotely over Wi-Fi. In offline/BLE buildings, no — you'll need to be within about 10-15 feet of the door, same as any Bluetooth-only lock.
Q: Can I use a key fob to get in?
A: No. Yale locks integrated with ButterflyMX do not support fob access — use your PIN code or the ButterflyMX app.
Q: What happens if I lose my phone?
A: Your PIN code will still work at the lock keypad as a backup.
Q: Why isn't my new PIN, visitor pass, or tour code working right away?
A: In offline/BLE buildings, access changes don't push to the lock automatically — they sync the next time someone is near the lock with Bluetooth on. If it's still not working after a day or two, contact your property manager.
