Please note that because these are Schlage fobs, they cannot be programmed using the ButterflyMX USB fob programmer and need to be programmed twice. Each fob must be enrolled directly at the ButterflyMX devices (intercom and reader) using the method described below.
A. Programming Schlage Fobs on the ButterflyMX Intercom
- Go to the ButterflyMX intercom.
- Present (tap/hold) the Schlage fob on the intercom’s built-in reader.
→ The door will not unlock yet — this first scan simply creates a “Denied” event in the system. - Log in to the ButterflyMX OS.
- Navigate to the Door Releases tab.
- Filter for the appropriate device if needed, then locate the most recent Denied event that corresponds to the fob scan you just performed.
- Click the green + button next to that Denied event.
- In the pop-up window:
- Select the correct Tenant (resident)
- Set Type to “Key fob & card”
- Click Save
- Test by presenting the same Schlage fob at the intercom again — the door should now unlock for that tenant.
Repeat these steps for each Schlage fob you need to program.
B. Programming the Same Schlage Fob on ButterflyMX Readers
Schlage fobs are read slightly differently by the intercom and the ButterflyMX readers (keypad or mullion), so each fob must also be enrolled separately for the readers.
You do not need to program/scan the FOB on every reader; just program it on one, and it will work on all readers at your property.
- Go to the desired ButterflyMX reader.
- Present the Schlage fob to the reader.
→ The door will not unlock yet — this creates a Denied event. - Log in to the ButterflyMX OS and go to the Door Releases tab.
- Filter for the specific reader/door if needed, then find the most recent Denied event from that fob scan.
- Click the green + button next to the event
- In the pop-up:
- Select the same Tenant you used for the intercom
- Set Type to “Key fob & card”
- Click Save
- Test by presenting the fob to the reader again — the door should now unlock.
Once you program the FOB it will work on all readers at your property
Important Note:
All devices (intercom and readers) must be online during programming and testing. Even if you successfully program a fob on an online device, it will not work on any offline devices until those devices come back online.
