Context:
The following information walks you through how to integrate your Yale smart lock with ButterflyMX
What You'll Need:
A complete unit/door matrix and a Yale Access account that the property can retain long-term. Commissioning phone must have internet access (cellular or Wi‑Fi) during setup in the Yale Access app.
What to Do:
-
Confirm Compatibility
Check your Yale smart lock part number against our Supported Smart Lock list
If there are any questions of compatibility, please reach out to solarch@butterflymx.com for confirmation and include the full part number.
-
Choose Your Connectivity Mode (Both are Supported)
Online (Wi‑Fi): Lock connects to building Wi‑Fi for online operation.
Offline (BLE): Supported. Wi‑Fi is not required. Lock operates offline using Bluetooth (BLE).
-
Network Requirements (Online/Wi‑Fi only)
If locks are connecting to Wi‑Fi, ensure 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi utilizing 802.11b/g/n is active throughout the building.
A site survey / heat map is strongly recommended and avoid network designs that increase roaming/traffic.
For best practices (mesh networks, SSID behavior, battery life impacts, firewall considerations), see: Wi-Fi Recommendations - Yale Smart Lock
-
Commission via Yale Access App (Required for BOTH Online and Offline)
-
Create a new Yale Access account (via the mobile app) for the property
-
If Online (Wi‑Fi): Set up Wi‑Fi:
-
Optional (as needed):
-
-
Important Notes
The ButterflyMX app only unlocks Yale smart locks. Auto-Lock and Auto-Lock Timing (DoorSense) are configured in the Yale Access app and not controlled by ButterflyMX.
Rename each lock from “Front Door” to its unique unit number / door name in Lock Settings.
Limit each Yale Access “House” to ~10 locks. We require naming Houses like “Building Name – 1st Fl”, etc.
-
Add ButterflyMX as Owner (Required)
Once all locks are set up (connected to Wi‑Fi, if Online) and uniquely named, go to the Guest Access tab in the Yale Access app, select “Invite via App Access,” and add ButterflyMX (585-531-8349) as an Owner to all locks.
Important: ButterflyMX must be added as Owner (not Guest), or the lock may not be visible for mapping.
-
Contact ButterflyMX Support (Required to Complete Setup)
Once ButterflyMX is added as an owner to all locks, contact our Support Team at (800) 398-4416 ext. 2 (Mon–Fri: 6am–10pm ET, Sat–Sun: 8am–8pm ET) for integration completion.
The locks must be mapped to your building in the ButterflyMX OS before they are available in your app. After mapping, online/offline status in OS may take time to reflect.
If a lock is factory reset or replaced, it will need to be re-commissioned in Yale Access, ButterflyMX must be re-added as Owner, and Support must re-map the new lock in ButterflyMX.
-
Offline / BLE Installations
Wi‑Fi is not required for offline/BLE operation. However, all access updates (PINs, permissions, move-ins/outs, etc.) must be synced via Bluetooth using the ButterflyMX app while physically near each lock.
Offline/BLE properties should plan for a designated staff member to periodically sync locks onsite after access changes: How to Sync Credentials to Yale Smart Lock via Bluetooth

Yale Tech Support
For Yale Access configuration issues or issues regarding your Yale smart lock hardware, contact Yale 24/7 Tech Support: 855-213-5841 or use the Yale troubleshooting guide: Yale Assure Lock 2 Troubleshooting Guide
Additional Notes:
If the lock battery is dead, residents typically need a physical key or 9V battery jump (model-dependent). Remote unlock is not possible if the lock has no power.
Optional: For online locks, consider enabling battery alerts in the ButterflyMX OS: How To Enable Smart Lock Battery Alerts in the ButterflyMX OS
Large permission/PIN changes can take a few minutes before a BLE sync makes sense.
Programming codes created on the lock during set up or codes generated in the Yale Access app will not be changed or overwritten. You must manually manage these codes via the Yale Access app.
