Context
If you have been sent a Visitor Pass for a property that uses a ButterflyMX QR Code Intercom, your entry experience is different from a standard video intercom. Instead of scanning a QR code at a camera, you will use a 6-digit PIN delivered to your phone or email, and then unlock the door directly from your smartphone browser — no app download required.
Note: This article is for visitors who have been issued a Visitor Pass at a property with a QR Code Intercom (a metal plaque with a laser-engraved QR code). If your property has a standard ButterflyMX video intercom (a screen-based device), please refer to How to Create and Use Visitor Pass.
Prerequisites
- You must have been sent a Visitor Pass by a resident or property staff member at the property.
- You must have access to the email address or phone number the pass was sent to.
- You must have a smartphone with internet access (Wi-Fi or mobile data).
⚠️ No app download is required. The entire experience takes place in your phone's mobile browser.
How a Visitor Receives Their Visitor Pass
When a resident creates a Visitor Pass and sends it to you, you will receive a text message (SMS) or email containing:
- A 6-digit PIN code
- A link to your Visitor Pass
- Instructions on how to use it
The pass will only be valid during the dates and times set by the resident when creating it.
How to Use Your Visitor Pass at a QR Code Intercom
Step 1: Locate the QR Code Intercom
When you arrive at the property, look for the ButterflyMX QR Code Intercom — a durable metal plaque featuring a laser-engraved QR code with a "Welcome" prompt.
Step 2: Scan the QR Code
Using your smartphone camera or a QR code scanning app, scan the QR code on the plaque. This will open the ButterflyMX welcome webpage in your mobile browser. No app download is needed.
Step 3: Tap 'Visitor Pass'
On the ButterflyMX welcome page, tap the 'Visitor Pass' button to proceed.
Step 4: Enter Your 6-Digit PIN
Enter the 6-digit PIN code that was sent to you in the text message or email. Then tap 'Enter' or 'Submit'.
💡 Tip: Make sure you are entering the code within its valid time window. If the pass has expired or is not yet active, it will not work.
Step 5: Swipe to Unlock
If your PIN is correct and the pass is valid, a Swipe-to-Open slider will appear on your phone screen. Simply swipe the slider to unlock the door or gate and enter the property.
Backup: Using a Keypad (if available)
If a keypad is installed alongside the QR Code Intercom at your property, you can also:
- Enter your 6-digit PIN directly on the keypad.
- Press the # (hash/pound) key to confirm.
- The door or gate will unlock.
Note: Not all QR Code Intercom installations include a keypad. If no keypad is present, you must use the smartphone browser method described above.

Troubleshooting
My PIN isn't working:
- Double-check you are entering the correct 6-digit code from your email or text.
- Confirm that the pass is currently active (within the valid time window).
- Make sure you are at the correct entrance — some properties have multiple access points.
- Contact the resident who issued the pass to confirm it hasn't expired or been deleted.
I didn't receive my Visitor Pass:
- Check your spam or junk folder if you were expecting an email.
- Ask the resident who issued the pass to confirm they sent it to the correct email or phone number.
- The resident can also resend the pass or create a new one from the ButterflyMX mobile app.
The Swipe-to-Open option isn't appearing:
- Ensure you have entered the correct PIN and tapped 'Enter'.
- Check your internet connection — you need an active Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.
- Try refreshing the page and scanning the QR code again.
