Context:
When setting up ButterflyMX at your property, one of the first things you will need to do is add your building’s units and floors into the ButterflyMX OS.
If you use a property management software (PMS) such as Entrata, RealPage, Yardi, or Rent Manager, you can automate unit and floor management through our PMS integrations, which automatically transfers tenant, unit, and floor data into the ButterflyMX system.
If you do not use a PMS or have not integrated yours with ButterflyMX, you can add units and floors manually.
How to add units or floors to the ButterflyMX System:
- Log in to the ButterflyMX OS
- Log in to your ButterflyMX OS on a computer.
- Click ‘Spaces’ from the left-hand menu
-
Navigate to the menu on the left-hand side of the page and click 'Spaces’. This section is a layout of your building, so you will see how many floors your building has, and which unit numbers are associated with those floors.
-
-
Click the ‘+ Add unit’ button
- A form will appear with the following fields:
- Label — Enter the unit number or name (e.g., 101, 2A, PH). This is how the unit will appear in the ButterflyMX OS and on the intercom directory.
-
Floor — Select the appropriate floor from the dropdown list of floors you have already created. If the floor does not yet exist, you can create it on the spot by typing the new floor number directly into the floor field and clicking "+ Add floor [number]" — this will create the floor and automatically assign it to the unit without needing to navigate away to the Floors tab first.
- Zone — Select the zone this unit belongs to (e.g., Zone A). Zones are used in buildings with elevator control systems to determine which floors a resident can access. If your building does not use elevator controls, you can leave this set to the default zone.
-
Access Groups — Optionally, select an Access Group for the unit. Any new tenant added to this unit in the future will automatically be placed in the designated Access Group. If left blank, new tenants will be added to the default Access Group.
-
How to Add a Floor (just Floor)
Click the + Add Floor button to open the new floor form.
The form will display the following fields:
Floor Number — Enter the number of the floor (e.g., 1, 2, 3). This is a required field.
Floor Letter (optional) — Enter a single letter suffix if needed (e.g., D, A, B). This is useful for buildings with sub-floors or wing designations (e.g., Floor 2D).
This is the ground floor (optional) — Check this box if this floor is the ground level of the building. Note that only one floor can be designated as the ground floor.
Click Save. The unit will now appear in your Spaces list and will be available to assign to tenants.
