Overview
Once Honeywell T6/T10 WiFi thermostats are installed and provisioned at your property, you can monitor and manage them directly from the ButterflyMX OS — no need to enter units or adjust devices manually. As a property manager, you have full visibility across all thermostats in your building and direct control over vacant units, common spaces, temperature limits, and schedules.

What You Can See and Control
As a property manager, here's a quick overview of your thermostat access:
| Vacant Units | Occupied Units | Common Spaces | |
|---|---|---|---|
| View temperature & humidity | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| View online/offline status | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Adjust temperature & mode | ✅ | ❌ | ✅ |
| Edit schedules | ✅ | ❌ | ✅ |
| Set holds & overrides | ✅ | ❌ | ✅ |
💡 Occupied unit thermostats are controlled by your residents through the ButterflyMX app. As a PM you can view their thermostat status but cannot adjust settings directly — this is by design to protect resident privacy and comfort.
Viewing Your Thermostats
- Log in to the ButterflyMX OS
- Navigate to Smart Home from the left sidebar
- Your thermostat dashboard displays all thermostats across the building, organized by floor and unit
- Each thermostat card shows:
- Current indoor temperature and humidity
- Online / offline status
- Current mode (Heat, Cool, Auto, or Off)
- Unit name and floor
⚠️ Note on online status: Online status may not always be real-time. A thermostat can occasionally appear online while temporarily offline. If a thermostat seems unresponsive, see the Thermostat Troubleshooting Guide & FAQ for next steps.
Adjusting Temperature Settings
For vacant units and common spaces, you can adjust the thermostat directly from the OS.
Changing the Temperature
- Click into the thermostat for the unit or space
- Use the +/− controls or enter a target temperature directly
- Select your preferred mode: Heat, Cool, Auto, or Off
- Auto is recommended — it allows the system to heat and cool as needed without requiring a mode change
- Optionally adjust fan mode: Auto, On, or Circulate
- Changes are applied within seconds
Setting a Hold
Holds let you override the active schedule without changing it permanently:
| Hold Type | What it Does |
|---|---|
| Run Schedule | Returns to the normal automated schedule |
| Hold Until | Pauses the schedule until a specific time, then resumes automatically |
| Permanent Hold | Maintains a set temperature indefinitely until you clear it |
💡 If a thermostat isn't following its schedule, check for an active hold — this is the most common cause.
Setting Building-Wide Temperature Limits
You can set minimum and maximum temperature limits that apply to all thermostats in your building. These limits restrict how low or high residents can set their thermostat in the ButterflyMX app.
- Navigate to Smart Home → Property Settings
- Under Thermostat Settings, set your desired minimum and maximum temperatures
- Click Save
System limits:
- Fahrenheit: 50°F minimum — 90°F maximum
- Celsius: 10°C minimum — 32°C maximum
⚠️ Important: Changing these limits is applied building-wide immediately and will clamp all existing thermostat setpoints to fit within the new range. For example, if a unit is set to 85°F and you lower the max to 80°F, that thermostat will be updated to 80°F automatically. We recommend making limit changes during off-hours.
💡 Residents can adjust temperature directly on the physical thermostat even outside these limits, however the system will automatically correct any out-of-range values when it detects them.
Managing Schedules & Automations
Schedules allow thermostats to automatically adjust temperature throughout the day based on time periods. ButterflyMX applies a default schedule automatically whenever a thermostat is assigned to a unit or when a unit's occupancy status changes.
Default Schedule Behavior
- When a unit becomes vacant, the thermostat mode is set to Off and a vacant default schedule is applied
- When a unit becomes occupied (move-in), the thermostat switches to an occupied schedule
- Default schedules are configured for your building during setup — contact your ButterflyMX team if you need them adjusted
Editing a Schedule
For vacant units and common spaces:
- Click into the thermostat
- Navigate to the Automation or Schedule section
- Adjust temperature setpoints and time periods for each day
- Click Save to apply
💡 Tip: Keep thermostats in Auto mode wherever possible. Schedules work most reliably in Auto because the system can heat or cool as needed without requiring a separate mode change.
Scheduled Overrides for Unit Tours
Scheduled overrides let you temporarily bring a vacant unit to a comfortable temperature for a tour, without permanently changing its schedule. Once the override period ends, the thermostat returns to its normal vacant settings automatically.
Setting a Scheduled Override
- Navigate to Smart Home → Property Settings
- Select Schedule Overrides
- Click Add Override
- Set the unit, date, start time, end time, and desired temperature
- Click Save
The thermostat will automatically activate at the scheduled start time and revert when the override ends — no manual intervention needed.
💡 Overrides are only available for vacant units. Occupied units are resident-controlled and cannot be overridden by property managers.
Email Alerts
ButterflyMX will automatically send you email alerts for the following thermostat events:
| Alert | Trigger |
|---|---|
| Temperature out of range | A thermostat has been outside the allowed temperature range for an extended period |
| Device offline | A thermostat has been offline for 12+ hours |
💡 Offline alerts may arrive several hours after a thermostat actually goes offline — this is a known limitation of how connectivity is tracked. If you suspect a thermostat is offline sooner, check the device display or attempt to adjust the temperature. If the change reverts immediately, the thermostat is likely offline.
Things to Keep in Mind
- Residents have full control of their own thermostat via the ButterflyMX app within the limits you've set
- Physical device adjustments by residents can temporarily exceed building limits — the system corrects these automatically
- Thermostat data refreshes every ~30 seconds — give it a moment after changes before expecting the display to update
- "Off" mode vs offline: Off mode means the thermostat is online but not actively heating or cooling — residents can still adjust settings. Offline means the device has lost connectivity entirely
- Common space thermostats are fully property manager-controlled — residents do not have access to these
