Context:
This guide explains how to properly troubleshoot the following ButterflyMX elevator relay modules using a multimeter.
- 8 Relays ButterflyMX Elevator Control System
- 8-64 Relays ButterflyMX Elevator Control System
What to do:
Step 1: Identify the Elevator Controller
- Locate the elevator controller that requires troubleshooting.
- The serial number can be found on the back of the controller.
- The controller is powered via Power over Ethernet (PoE).
- Connect the Ethernet cable to the ETH port.
- Confirm the following indicator lights:
- Ethernet link lights
- PoE light
- Status light
Elevator Module Types
- Small Elevator Module
- Contains 8 DRY relays
- Each relay includes:
- Normally Open (NO) – labeled B
- Common (COM) – labeled IN
- Normally Closed (NC) – labeled A
- Rack Model Elevator Module
- Supports 8–64 relays
- Powered via PoE when up to 4 cards are installed
If more than 4 cards are used, connect an external power supply to the back of the rack
Confirm Ethernet link, PoE, and status lights after connection
Before Troubleshooting
Ensure all terminal screws are securely tightened
No wires should be connected during testing
- A multimeter is required
Troubleshooting Methods
Method 1: Continuity Mode
(Set multimeter to continuity mode – typically indicated by a sound/wave symbol)
Testing Normally Open (NO)
- Place:
- Black probe on Common (IN)
- Red probe on Normally Open (B)
- Trigger the system (Support can assist if newly installed).
- When activated:
- Multimeter should beep continuously during the trigger duration.
- LED indicator above the relay will light when activated.
Testing Normally Closed (NC)
- Place probes on:
- Common (IN)
- Normally Closed (A)
- In idle state:
- Continuous beep should be heard.
- When triggered:
- Beep should stop for the duration of activation.
Method 2: Resistance Mode (Alternative Method)
(Set multimeter to resistance/ohms mode)
Testing Normally Open (NO)
- Place probes on:
- Common (IN)
- Normally Open (B)
- Idle state:
- Reading should show OL or very high resistance (open circuit).
- Trigger system:
- Resistance should drop to ~0 ohms
- Confirms relay contacts have closed.
- Reading stays at 0 ohms while triggered.
Testing Normally Closed (NC)
- Place probes on:
- Common (IN)
- Normally Closed (A)
- Idle state:
- Reading should be ~0 ohms
- Trigger system:
- Reading should change to OL
- Confirms circuit has opened.
- OL reading remains during activation.
If Results Are Not As Expected
If any readings differ from the expected results:
- Take a photo or record a short video of the issue.
- Share it with the ButterflyMX Support Team for further assistance.
