Context: This article explains how to configure BAS-IP SIP-enabled in-unit panels to work with a ButterflyMX intercom.
This integration allows calls placed from the ButterflyMX intercom to ring BAS-IP in-unit SIP panels using the BAS-IP Cloud PBX.
Note: ButterflyMX Support handles SIP number assignment and backend configuration. Installers are responsible for BAS-IP hardware installation and SIP configuration.
Before You Begin
Confirm the following requirements are met before starting installation:
- BAS-IP in-unit panels are SIP-enabled
- Panels have network connectivity (Ethernet or BAS-IP supported IP conversion)
- Internet access is available to reach BAS-IP Cloud PBX services
- The ButterflyMX intercom is installed, online, and can place test calls
- SIP credentials and a SIP number range have been provided by BAS-IP
How the Integration Works
When a visitor places a call at the ButterflyMX intercom:
1. The visitor selects a resident from the directory
2. ButterflyMX looks up the assigned in-unit SIP number
3. The call routes through ButterflyMX SIP infrastructure
4. The call is handed off to the BAS-IP Cloud PBX
5. The BAS-IP Cloud PBX delivers the call to the in-unit SIP panel
Step 1: Install the BAS-IP In-Unit Panels
- Mount and power each BAS-IP SIP panel
- Verify network connectivity at each unit
- Confirm the panels can reach BAS-IP Cloud PBX services
Step 2: Configure SIP Credentials on BAS-IP Panels
Using the credentials provided by BAS-IP:
- Assign the correct SIP number to each in-unit panel
- Confirm the panel successfully registers to the BAS-IP Cloud PBX
- Verify each SIP number is unique and mapped to a single apartment
Step 3: Update the Door Release Digit (Required)
By default, BAS-IP panels use "#" as the door release digit.
This must be changed to "9" for compatibility with ButterflyMX.
On each BAS-IP in-unit panel:
1. Open the panel’s DTMF or door release settings
2. Change the door open digit from "#" to "9"
3. Save and apply the configuration
Important: If this setting is not updated, residents will not be able to unlock the door.
Step 4: Create a SIP Number Mapping List
Create a list that includes:
- Apartment or Unit Number
- Assigned BAS-IP SIP Number
Note: Each SIP number must be mapped to only one unit.
Step 5: Submit the SIP Mapping to ButterflyMX Support
Provide the SIP mapping list to ButterflyMX Support so they can:
- Add SIP numbers to the ButterflyMX portal
- Enable the In-Unit Phone Number setting for each unit
- Provision backend SIP routing
Note: Installers do not add SIP numbers directly in the ButterflyMX portal.
Step 6: Test the Integration
After configuration is complete:
- Place a test call from the ButterflyMX intercom
- Confirm the BAS-IP in-unit panel rings
- Answer the call and verify two-way audio
- Press **9** to confirm the door unlocks
- Repeat testing for multiple units
Troubleshooting
If the in-unit panel does not ring:
- Confirm the SIP number is registered on the BAS-IP panel
- Verify the SIP mapping matches the submitted list exactly
- Ensure SIP traffic is not blocked on the network
2. If the door does not unlock:
- Confirm the door release digit is set to "9"
- Verify the ButterflyMX intercom relay is functioning
Additional Notes
- SIP numbers must be five-digit numbers up to **52999**
- Each SIP number must be unique
- For SIP ranges exceeding 52999, contact ButterflyMX Support
